An expandable networked universe for the art of interdisciplinary improvisation
Genetic Choir and WhatIIIF? are fundraising and gathering partners to develop an open online environment for improvisers from any discipline, and their audiences, to reflect on and improve their craft.

As part of the WhatIIIF? initiative, and together with all improvisers and researchers who would like to contribute, we want to create an online hub where it is engaging and enjoyable to exchange about all aspects of the art of improvisation.

WHO ARE WE? ---> Click here for the list of artists and organisations from 21+ countries who have already gathered around this proposal.

We, improvisers, artists, social-changers and researchers, want to develop this knowledge-hub for interdisciplinary professional exchange to provide and share hands-on improvisation knowledge to ourselves, colleagues and audiences, who co-create by their presence and their very request to see instantly composed work to the ongoing practice of improvisation.

By connecting artists and audiences in an online space we present improvisation as an art form that is now more relevant than ever: applied in various disciplines inside and outside the arts, and an essential tool for artful and meaningful living together.

The new web environment will be:

• an online universe that can be navigated with an improviser’s mindset, where work, tools and reflections can be continually added and intuitively organized, and which connects ideas, people and public around this unique craft;

• a dynamic encyclopedia of interdisciplinary improvisation practice, where professionals from all disciplines can share and exchange about their working methods and research;

• a link to SHARE EUROPE - the database of interdisciplinary improvisation practitioners and their work, mapped out explicitly across the European landscape, expanded to include current projects and future events with an agenda function;

• a central place for existing and new audiences to be informed about the art of interdisciplinary improvisation in its diverse forms and be inspired to apply improvisation practices to their own daily lives.

WHY?

Kickstarter of this plan was the covid-19 pandemic, which threw literally everyone in situations of having to improvise:

Governments and care organizations improvised on the very edge of time, making decisions with incomplete data that affected a lot of people daily. We have all been asked to improvise personally, finding new meaning for our lives while being mainly at home, creating new structures and experiences for ourselves and the ones that are close to us. These times have called into question and fast-tracked alternatives for the ways we organise ourselves on the level of culture, governance, care, education and social relationships. The pandemic has not only shown the urgency for acting in the present, but heightened our awareness of (physical) space, made us value silence and pause, asked us to act without seeing the whole and to be engaged and caring while not acting.

All the above are central and essential aspects of the practice of interdisciplinary improvisation.

The art of improvisation is part of many disciplines and practices, in the arts and beyond. It is time to create a space and find a common ground to develop this interdisciplinary craft, in whichever context people are working with it.

BASIC ASSUMPTIONS

There are and have been several initiatives already that attempt to 'map' the art of improvisation and reflect on it. This is usually happening inside one specific discipline, like for example music or dance, and the degree to which these efforts are findable and accessible differs.

We would like to create a web environment where all this work - from past and present and from any discipline - could be accessed and is presented in an engaging way, combined with the current cultural activity of interdisciplinary improvisation artists in Europe. We imagine a web environment where the navigation and structure of the platform has the spirit of improvisation (associative, non-hierarchical...) but also allows information to be found efficiently if that is your goal. Moreover, we imagine an architecture that can be structured by every user from their perspective. Please see further below our first thoughts about a web architecture that would make this possible.

The project is open for all improvisers from any field to join and contribute. Moreover, we are looking for partners from education and research, from funding bodies and other support organisations to make this dream possilbe. For now, you can send an email to Thomas Johannsen if you have question or would like to be involved.

WEB ARCHITECTURE

In recent years, one of the initiatives to talk about interdisciplinary improvisation knowledge from an interdisciplinary perspective has been the open, collaborative knowledge base on instantcomposition.com. The content of this existing platform could be used as a starting point, turning all existing articles there into ‘nodes’ of an expandable network universe that will be tangibly visualized and can be ‘walked through’ in the new environment. At the same time, we also want to start from scratch with all our new partners: re-envisioning how a shared exchange platform of interdisciplinary improvisation knowledge should function and look like. How can it be engaging, approachable, inviting, satisfying all the senses? It should invite new content to be added by any artist/improviser involved and the connection pathways to be able to change over time, so that the architecture of the network (e.g. which objects are grouped close to each other) is constantly evolving and not pre-conceived in a certain order.

Additionally to an intuitive way of browsing that we want to encourage, we also want to make it possible to find things in a straightforward way (via a search function, a cartographical map and an agenda). So there will be at least two ways in which visitors can use this online environment:

• As an online experience to dive into, get lost in and get inspired by creating unexpected and new connections in the content of improvisers from all over Europe.

• As an informative website about the art of improvisation and where to find it in your neighbourhood

Here some more details about our first ideas for a navigational structure and user interface:

• The contents of the database generate a graphical representation of an unstable landscape which acts as the user interface.
• Users and visitors to the platform can follow tracks/routes through various zones where different art disciplines meet.
• The tracks are generated by the indexing system which structures the underlying database.
• These tracks connect different objects of data that can be opened.
• Such objects can be sound, image, text, video files or html scripts which can be created/uploaded by the participants in the system.
• Each object is connected to a number of keywords (tags) which feed the indexing system, which in turn influences the way objects are spatially/graphically related and the way the platform can be navigated.
• This all forms an open and freely accessible portal in which participants present projects, reflect on practical and philosophical aspects of interdisciplinary improvisation and make contact with each other.
• Knowledge and information can be mutually shared with each other and with visitors (audience).
• The user interface works as a hybrid between a lens and a tuner that you can turn and tune to observe the world of interdisciplinary improvisation from an ever-changing perspective.
• Investigations and exploration journeys into the active scene of interdisciplinary improvisation can be embarked upon and will return varying results each time.
• Constantly dynamic, constantly flowing,  - over months and years - a regularly used and continually updated web environment, where new entries to the knowledge base, and new entrances to various data clusters keep appearing.
• In addition to the intuitive navigation, a clear search function is also offered and the possibility to find live events (happening online or offline) that improvisers are announcing.
• There will also be a system for users and visitors to store data and information in their own domain.

We are taking our inspiration in part from the Taswir Atlas online project, which shows an intuitive way of organizing content. The Taswir Project has graciously allowed us to use their platform for two years now to test these methods.  One learning already: Taswir Atlas works mainly with images and texts in a 2D representation, while we would like to create content from a wider range of sources and preferably in a graphical 3D environment for more 'depth' of interconnectivity.

We wish that the development of the expandable networked universe can happen in international collaboration, with partners even beyond Europe, and with development choices being made in close consultation with our network.

Network of improvisation professionals and organisations supporting the initiative at this moment
(a selection, for readability - the actual number of artists that are connected through the 'hubs' of people and organisations listed below is even higher)

The represented 21 European countries are listed first in alphabetical order, overseas countries underneath. Note that some of the artists reside and/or work in several countries, so sometimes choices had to be made where to place them.
